Child burnt while watching father clean his bike

kk2201aKUCHING: A two-year-old girl suffered burns to her leg and face after the petrol used by her father to clean an engine component of his motorcycle suddenly flared up.

The incident took place around 1pm yesterday in Demak Laut when the toddler was standing next to her father and observing him clean the carburettor of his motorcycle using petrol.

It was unclear how the fuel suddenly flared up, but the resulting combustion caused burns to both the child’s legs as well as several spots on her face.

The father, who was unhurt, brought the girl to the Sarawak General Hospital where she was treated prior to being allowed to return home.

In an unrelated incident, a youth sustained a nasty gash to his face after his motorcycle clipped the rear of a bus at a traffic light intersection yesterday.

The 22-year-old victim was travelling to work when the incident happened near Sungai Apong around 7.30am.

He is said to have been trying to avoid hitting a bus, which was making a turn at the time, but ended up crashing on the road after the handlebar of his motorcycle clipped the bus’ rear.

Personnel from the Civil Defence Department were despatched to the scene to attend to the injured victim and later brought him to the Sarawak General Hospital.
