KUCHING: National Sports Enthusiasts Council (Nasec) hopes to assist former athletes with their welfare, such as career opportunities, in appreciation for their (former athletes) sacrifices for the country.

Nasec vice president Anuar Hassan said they were willing to help within their means by coordinating with Asia Herbal Biotech (AHB).

Nasec had also arranged with AHB as a sponsor for Ice Skating Association Malaysia (Isam).

Anuar thanked AHB for discharging its corporate social responsibility to help `Flying Dayak’ Watson Nyambek, who is now a sprint coach based in Miri.

AHB corporate advisor Dato Seri Tengku Baharuddin Ibni Al Marhum Sultan Mahmud Al Muktafi Billah Shah gave the contribution to Watson during dinner at Pullman Hotel here on Tuesday.

“This is the beginning for Nasec to plan from time to time to assist those in the sports industry. Watson Nyambek had held the country’s record for the 100m sprint for 18 years now, and he deserved to be recognised and be given assistance,” said Anuar at the gathering.

Permanent Secretary with the Social Development Ministry, Kameri Affandi, State Sports Council director Dr Ong Kong Swee, Sarawak Dayak National Union (SDNU) Youth chief Churchill Edward, AHB chief executive officer Rick Gan, Nasec Emeritus Datuk Balwant Singh Kler, secretary-general S. Rajasegram and Watson Nyambek’s wife, Fellizia Michael, were also present.

Annuar expressed their gratitude for the joint efforts between Sarawak Government, Sarawak Sports Council and Nasec in making the event a success.

AHB later presented a cheque amounting RM10,300 to Watson.

The amount represented his national 100m record of 10.30 seconds he achieved in 1998.
