KENINGAU: The district police headquarters launched the interior zone crime prevention club in conjunction with the 209th Police Day held at the municipal field here on Saturday.

Assistant Agriculture and Food Industry Minister and Liawan state assemblyman Datuk Haji Sairin Karno launched the ceremony.

Keningau police chief Deputy Superintendent Douglas Nyeging Taong told reporters after the ceremony that the club would attract more people, especially youths from the area, including those from Tambunan, Sook and Nabawan, to jointly fight crimes that were happening around them.

With the formation of the club, he believed the community could play a more proactive role in the prevention of crimes in their areas.

“The club membership is not limited to people in the villages but also for government departments and agencies and the private sector to work together to prevent crimes in the workplace,” he said.

Douglas said this was the first club of its kind to be established in the state, and as the police chief, he would ensure criminal activities, especially cases of burglary and drugs, could be combated together.

According to him, the establishment of the club was to provide opportunities for youths to participate in programs organized by the police in this area.

Douglas said the club aimed to reach out to youths and help them avoid social problems, crimes and other unhealthy activities.

By doing so, it is hoped that youths will be inspired to join security forces such as the police, he said.

He said the club membership was open to the public regardless of age, race and religion.

He hoped with the launching of the club, more space would be given to all parties, communities, government departments and agencies, the private sector and youths to work together to prevent crimes in their areas.

Meanwhile, Sairin when met at the event gave his full support to the club as it could assist police in preventing crimes in this area.

At the same time, youths could further enhance their understanding of the law in relation to crimes, he said.

Sairin urged the community, including youths and staff of government departments and agencies and the private sector, to become members of the club in order to maintain peace and security in the area.

Present at the event were Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister Datuk Ellron Alfred Angin, Assistant Infrastructure Development Minister Datuk Bobbey Ahfang Suan, District Officer Haji Yusop Haji Osman, Consul General of the Republic of Indonesia for Sabah, Akhmad DH Irfan, and Bank Rakyat Keningau branch manager Abdul Aziz Zainol Din.
