KUCHING: Miri continued to surge ahead in the race for the overall title on the third day of the 44th Sarawak Schools Sports Council (MSSS) Track and Field Championship at Unimas Stadium in Samarahan yesterday.

The last year’s first runners-up captured seven more gold, seven silver and two bronze medals for a total haul of 25 gold, 23 silver and 19 bronze medals and amass 329 points to lead the field.

In close second are defending champions Kuching who collected six gold, three silver and 11 bronzes for a total haul of 20 gold, 12 silver and 18 bronze medals for 271.5 points.

Sarikei are in third spot with 186 points after bagging 12 gold, 14 silver and nine bronze medals while in fourth to fifth spot were Bintulu (8-6-4 — 109pts) and Sibu (6-7-5 — 106pts).

More records were broken yesterday with Wong Yu Kiong of Sarikei registering the first new record of the day by hurling the shot putt to 14.29m in the Boys’ U12. The old record was 13.91m held by Samuel Ling Jing Yi in 2012.

In the Boys’ U14 shot putt final, Miri’s Zeronne Felipe Thomas recorded a new distance of 15.82m to erase the old record of 14.25 set by Eric Tiong Ing Kuen in 2013.

Mandy Goh Li of Kuching took the Girls’ U18 long jump gold with a record leap of 5.33m, beating the old mark of 5.13m.

Forty-five more events will be held today, which is also the final day of the annual inter-division track and field championship organised to select the best athletes to represent Sarawak in the MSSM Track and Field Championship.
