Fire leaves family without a roof over their heads

MIRI: A family of six was left homeless after fire destroyed their rented wooden house in Riam early yesterday.

Fortunately, all members of the family managed to escape as the flames spread quickly.

According to Shanti Ukok, 33, her lot comprising her husband, their three young children and also her brother were asleep when the incident occurred.

“The smell of smoke woke me up. Then, I spotted thick smoke coming into the room. I immediately woke everyone up and we ran out of the house,” she said.

It is learned that Shanti and her family had been renting the house for over the past decade.

A fire engine from Miri fire station was despatched to the scene upon receiving a distress call at 5.36am. The firefighters managed to put out the fire several minutes later.

Miri Fire and Rescue Zone 6 chief Law Poh Kiong said the house was razed totally to the ground and his side has yet to determine the cause of fire.
