SIBU: Organisers are now on the run following the tough stand taken by the police here to put an end to illegal gambling through cock-fighting.

Turning to setting up temporary dens, luck, however, is not on their side.

An organiser tried to hold a gambling session beside a shop at Jong Kong Lane yesterday afternoon.

But, the police stormed the place at 2pm when a group of gamblers were betting on the fighting cocks, resulting in the arrest of seven gamblers and seizure of seven cocks.

The raid was conducted by the D7 Unit of Sibu police led by Insp Hairul Hussin.

The successful raid came two days after the police had crushed a similar illegal activity under the Lebaan Bridge in the outskirts of the town.

In the raid at 3.30pm last Friday, the D7 Unit led by ASP Mohd Fazirul Mohd Fisol arrested 12 men aged 33 to 66.

Four live cocks, various gambling utensils and cash amounting to RM1,230 were seized.

Two of the detainees were Filipinos.

More than 40 people were at the pit during the raid.

All the cases are probed under section 3 (1) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1962.
