KUCHING: Staff at the Election Commission (EC) office here had a busy time yesterday following EC chairman Datuk Seri Mohd Hashim Abdullah’s announcement on Thursday of the nomination day and election dates.

A staff member said there were many visitors but she could not tell if they were possible candidates or other individuals.

“I am not on duty at this counter the whole day so I don’t know who has come. We are working on shifts. We are also not authorised to speak to the press on any information nor can we reveal how many nomination forms have been sold,” she said.

Another staff member said the chairman would issue an official statement on Monday.

Meanwhile, EC Sarawak director Datu Takun Sunggah said nomination forms priced at RM20 per set are available from the EC office here or from appointed returning officers.

However, he said there are a limited number of nomination forms.

“I am not sure how many forms have been bought today (yesterday) but I expect many candidates or representatives will be coming to the office to purchase the form,” he said when contacted.

“The deadline to buy the form will be before the nomination day.”

The 11th state election will be held on May 7, with nomination on April 25, while early voting would be on May 3.

Based on the updated electoral roll on April 10, there are over 1.138 million registered voters, including 25,022 advanced voters who are military, police and General Operations Force (GOF) personnel as well as their spouses and 106 absentee voters (those residing overseas).
