SANDAKAN: The government will provide appropriate assistance to the six Indonesian crew of a tugboat who escaped from being kidnapped by an armed group in southern Philippine waters on Friday.

Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman said he was told by the police that the Indonesian crew were rescued by the Malaysian security forces.

He said one of the crew who was injured was taken to Semporna Hospital for treatment.

“We are giving them, our neighbour’s citizens, humanitarian aid,” he told reporters after opening the Batu Putih Zone polling district cluster meeting here yesterday.

Asked on the cooperation between the government of Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines on security issues, Musa said it had long been established and would continue to be strengthened.

“I hope the ties will continue,” said Musa.  — Bernama
