KUCHING: The local community and their leaders must make Kuching a dengue-free city.

Kuching City South (MBKS) Mayor Dato James Chan said the people should work together and be responsible for the cleanliness of the city, preventing it from becoming a breeding ground for the Aedes mosquito.

“Residents, business proprietors, students and community leaders and the people at large should ensure that our city is clean the whole year round,” he said.

“Today we have more than 100 people involved in the community programme at SK Song Kheng Hai carpark and compound here so Kuching will be a clean, beautiful and safe city,” he added.

He was met by reporters at the Dengue Cleaning Campaign organised by Kuching Chinese Community Leaders Association at the entrance of SK Song Kheng Hai compound here yesterday.

Chan welcomed the public support and effort to make Kuching clean and beautiful.

“Our community leaders should be role models in doing such community work and bringing people together,” he said.

He hoped such campaigns would become a culture and was glad the public were facilitators of such community work.

“The role has changed and it’s good for the council when people can work together to ensure our city is clean,” he said.

He thanked community leaders and students from SK Song Kheng Hai for their caring attitude in making the city clean and dengue-free.

Chan further lamented that the bad habits of illegal dumping is still occurring in the city and this created mosquito breeding which led to an outbreak of dengue.

“This irresponsible habit need to stop if we want a healthy, clean and safe environment for our children and future generations,” he said.

Community leader Temenggong Lu Kim Yong said community leaders would be in close touch in working on community projects with DBKU, MBKS and Padawan Municipal Council.

“We must be serious in combating dengue and the only way is to continue to keep our city clean,” he said.

Lu said the spirit shown by young people from SK Song Kheng Hai should be emulated by others, especially the young in helping the community and the authority prevent disease.
