KAPIT: Projects to erect more telecommunication towers will be a priority for the Hulu Rajang parliamentary constituency.

Hulu Rajang Member of Parliament Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong said students in the area are lagging behind because they have no access to the Internet.

“My priority is to erect more telecommunication towers to enhance mobile services. This is very important because students and members of longhouse JKKKs (village security and development committees) were given netbooks.

“Unless the mobile services are extended to us, we’ll be lagging behind in terms of online surfing and communicating with one another. Our students will suffer because they’re taught to use computers but denied the Internet,” he said during an SMK Baleh parent-teacher association event in Nanga Karangan Ara, Baleh recently.

Ugak said he has also highlighted the urgency to construct a road from Nanga Mujong to Nanga Gaat.

“The Baleh Bridge across the Baleh River will provide road accessibility to Mujong and Bukit Mabong (Tunoh) as well as to Putai where the proposed Baleh Dam site is located.

“The Baleh Bridge has been completed and now is the construction of the RM35 million Mujong Bridge. Also I want the trunk road eventually to provide access roads to link the various longhouses on both sides of Baleh River to provide easy and cheap transportation as an alternative to river transportation now, which is expensive and time consuming,” he added.

Ugak also approved an RM300,000 grant to erect a multipurpose hall and handed over RM6,000 to purchase of an outboard engine for the school.
