‘Resort City’ stresses on security

THE focus for the constituency of Senadin seems to be on security – a need that arises from the rapid housing development there as well as in Permyjaya.

Councillor Keith Chin hopes that security matters affecting the constituency, including Kuala Baram and up to Sungai Tujuh Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) Complex would be given urgent attention.

“Having a dedicated police station in Senadin is a much-needed call. As councillors, it is our duty to go to the ground and meet the people, gathering their input, complaints and feedback on how to heighten security measures here, especially in the commercial districts.”

In just 20 years, the overall population in Senadin and Permyjaya has gone over 100,000 and this figure is expected to rise further, in line with the implementation of various housing projects alongside the boost in road connectivity, in the form of RM39-million Pujut Link Road that commenced construction in 2014.

This 4.5km stretch, which also includes a 150m concrete bridge, connects Jalan Tudan-Kuala Baram with Miri Bypass.

Chin, who is deputy chairman of the Miri City Building Control and Security Permanent Committee, also highlights the squatter issue and infrastructure in Tudan Desaras resettlement.

“Tudan Desaras not only houses former squatters from Canada Hill, but also those resettled from Kampung Merikan – a squatter village in Lutong.

“This area (Tudan Desaras) needs better drainage, as well as stable supply of electricity and connectivity via Telekom Malaysia.”

It is learned that the squatter problem in Miri remains the most serious among urban centres in Sarawak – having recorded more than 3,000 squatter units across the city.
