KUCHING: UCSI University Sarawak Campus has kicked off its May 2016 semester with a bang.

Classes for this semester are steadily filling up, according to its publicity release, with most of them almost reaching full capacity.

The most popular programme this semester is the Diploma in Culinary Arts Programme with a 63 per cent increase in student enrolment.

This is the highest increase since the programme started, and with expert chefs, state-of-the-art equipment and cutting edge instruction methods, it is expected to continue to grow.

The Diploma in Hotel Management Programme has also fared exceptionally well with an increased enrolment of 40 per cent.

The student population within the various UCSI diploma programmes hailed mainly from various secondary schools throughout Sarawak.

This semester, many of the new students are graduates of SMK Kuching High, SMK Batu Lintang, SMK Sungai Maong, SMK St Joseph, SMK Batu Kawa, SMK DPHA Gapor, SMK Green Road, SMK Sungai Tapang, SMK Tiong Hin and SMK Tung Hua.

UCSI is calling students who are interested to join its May 2016 intake to register now.

The last day of registration for the May 2016 intake is on May 20.

In conjunction with UCSI University’s 30th anniversary this year, the University will be awarding RM30 million worth of scholarships and bursaries to eligible students.

So far 58 per cent of the students who registered for this May intake have received scholarships and bursaries within the categories of UCSI University Trust Scholarship, UCSI University Trust Pre-U Scholarship, UCSI University Trust Education Grant and UCSI University Trust Financial Assistance.

UCSI Sarawak will be moving to UCSI Hotel in 2016. In this new venue, UCSI Sarawak will be a teaching hotel, providing real life experience to students as they are trained in an authentic hotel environment.

This state-of-the art designed campus will be equipped with a Housekeeping Suite, Culinary Laboratory, Pastry and Bakery Laboratory, Gastronomy Laboratory, Chemistry Laboratory, Biology Laboratory, Learning Haus, Lecture Rooms, Tutorial Rooms and Discussion Rooms.

UCSI Sarawak, which houses the Faculty of Hospitality Management (FHTM) and the Centre for Pre-U Studies (CPU), is in the midst of setting up the Faculty of Business and Information Science (Fobis).

There will be one existing programme as well as three new programmes under Fobis.

They are BA (Hons) Commerce, Diploma in International Business, BComm (Hons) Accounting and Finance, and the BComm (Hons) Marketing.

The new programmes will be launched in September 2016.

The BA (Hons) Commerce concentrates on international business and entrepreneurship.

The Diploma in International Business focuses on providing solid global business knowledge and skills, equipping

students with key business competencies in areas such as human capital management, trading and investment, global marketing communication and entrepreneurship across geopolitical boundaries.

The BComm (Hons) Accounting and Finance ensures that upon completion of this programme, students will be able to obtain nine professional papers for ACCA; while the BComm (Hons) Marketing is recognised by the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM).

The September intake is now open for registration.

Students interested in registering should bring along their academic transcripts or result slips for enrolment.
