BEIJING: China and Malaysia have identified 12 potential industries for cooperation, said Guo Jianmin, Planning and Communication Division Director of International Cooperation Centre (ICC), National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC).

He said besides port and industrial parks, there are several other potential sectors for cooperation between China and Malaysia, including manufacturing and service industries.

“Besides high-end equipment manufacturing, there is also potential to cooperate in the service and aerospace industry, as well as infrastructure construction such as railways and highways.

“There are 12 areas for cooperation.

“Based on the proposal by Malaysia and China, 54 key cooperative projects were identified,” he said at a press briefing on China’s policies on international production capacity cooperation, in conjunction with a seven-day media trip for Southeast Asian journalists.

The trip, covering Beijing, Tianjian, southern Suzhou and Quanzhou, was organised by the Department of Asian Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and assisted by ICC.

The objective was to enable Southeast Asian journalists to get a better understanding of China’s production capacity cooperation as well as to visit enterprises engaged in the production capacity collaboration.

Guo said the proposed projects would benefit companies from China and Malaysia, adding both countries would work closely to identify several priority projects from the 54 key projects and facilitate project implementation.

Asked to comment on the potential collaboration, the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) office in China said both sides will facilitate project implementation as well as find business partners for projects.

“We hope the cooperation on promoting specific investment projects will yield tangible results.

We also look forward to working closely and meeting  regularly with ICC,” Consul (Investment) Simon Lee Yew Weng said when contacted.

Lee said MIDA hoped the joint cooperation would be able to develop industrial sectors that are important to Malaysia.

Established in 1993, ICC is a government institution directly subordinate to NDRC.

Since 2011, ICC has been successfully transformed from an institution specialised in foreign services for government agencies to a new-type think tank engaged in multifarious missions including policy research, international cooperation, planning and consulting, foreign services and high-end training. — Bernama
