KAPIT: The police have advised those planning to return to their kampungs for Gawai Dayak or travel during the holiday period to keep them informed.

Kapit OCPD DSP Freddy Bian said homeowners should arrange for mobile patrol vehicles to visit their areas to deter crime.

“Those leaving for long holidays, please make sure to take care of your property. Inform the neighbours and the police if necessary so that police could arrange for the mobile police vehicles to patrol the housing area to deter thieves,” he said during a recent interview.

“On our part as law enforcers, we police are certainly concerned about the public and their property’s safety and security because to maintain law and order is our core activity. We’ll try our very best to ensure peace and an orderly celebration without any untoward incidents. We want those celebrating to enjoy the festival in the true spirit of harmony.”

He said members of the public can contact Kapit police on 084-796222 or 084-796322 for assistance.

Meanwhile, Freddy also warned road users to take extra care and to be alert on the road.

“I’ve noticed the increased volume of vehicles in town. Over the past one week, there have been three cases of road accidents. Two occurred along Jalan Ulu Sungai Selirik and one along Jalan Selirik. In the motorbike accident, a 23-year- old youth was killed when his motorbike knocked into the roadside electric pole. Then a four-wheeled drive overturned, landing the driver in the hospital and there was also another minor motorbike accident.

“I advise motorists, if you drink don’t drive. And drive slowly to reach home. Safety is our collective responsibility,” he said.
