Sarawak Bumiputera Teachers Union against CCTVs in schools

SIBU: The Sarawak Bumiputera Teachers Union (KGBS) is against a proposal for schools to install closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras to check indiscipline among students.

KGBS president Ahmad Malie said the move could cause uneasiness among parents.

“KGBS does not support and is against the installation of CCTVs in all buildings and compound in school. The public need to understand that the school is a place or institution that is safe and produces individuals with high moral standards and noble values,” he told The Borneo Post yesterday.

“Hence, with the installation of CCTVs, it will give an impression as if school environment is not safe, and indirectly will cause parents to be less confident about their children’s safety in the school concerned.”

Ahmad also called on the public not to amplify cases of indiscipline involving students.

Minister of Education Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid Ahmad had recently advised parent-teacher associations and schools to take the initiative to install CCTVs to prevent cases of indiscipline.

He was commenting on the decision of SK Bumbung Lima, Kepala Batas, Penang to install CCTVs to track down and prevent misconduct among pupils – the first primary school in the country to do so.
