KUCHING: Police will be on the look-out for a ‘one-armed bandit’ after three would-be robbers fled in panic when a family valiantly fought back in the botched robbery at Ellis Road yesterday.

In the 9.14am incident, a 17-year-old girl and her 45-year-old father were asleep when the robbers broke into the bedroom wearing surgical masks. One was armed with a crow bar.

Directing both victims to be quiet and demanding for money and jewellery, the man boldly rejected the demand which agitated the robbers and leading to a struggle.

Then when his 22-year-old son just emerged from the toilet next door, the other robber in the house armed with a machete watched over him.

On realizing that his father was wrestling with another robber, the son charged his captor and took over the machete before his dad somehow swung it at one of the two intruders.

The robbers fled to a black Proton Persona with an accomplice waiting inside.

Investigations revealed that the robbery suspects entered the house after cutting down the rear gate, cutting the pad lock and forcing their way through the kitchen door.

The robbers also threw fireworks into the living room to confuse their prey but which failed to ignite.

At least two in the courageous family suffered bodily injuries.

A police forensics team has retrieved 14 DNA samples, a machete and a crow bar as the case evidence.
