SIBU: Assistant Minister for Science Research and Biotechnology Dr Annuar Rapaee is impressed with the public support for the 185-stall Ramadan Bazaar at Sibu Town Square Phase 2.

“The previous year it was a bit slow but this year there are bigger crowds. That is why this type of bazaar has to be held yearly. We hope to work closely again with Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) next year to make it grander,” Dr Annuar told reporters after officiating at the bazaar here yesterday.

The month-long event this year operating daily until July 4 is organised by the Ramadan Bazaar, Phase 2 pro tem committee in collaboration with Sarawak Bumiputera Hawkers and Petty Traders Association Sibu unit.

Dr Annuar hoped to have better tents and proper wiring connection for the bazaar like that in Kuching next year.

The Nangka assemblyman proposed that the bazaar have more variety such as textile besides food.

Accompanied by Sarawak Bumiputera Hawkers and Petty Traders Association chairman Nawawi Ibrahim, secretary Sahminan Sirat, unit chairman Mohamad Safree Mohamad and organising chairman Hussin Salim, Dr Annuar visited the stalls and distributed aprons to the traders. Bank Islam Sibu branch sponsored 250 aprons.

Earlier, he witnessed the handover of a mock cheque for RM94,500 for the Ramadan Bazaar Scheme (SBR) benefiting 68 traders who are mostly members of the Association.

The scheme is jointly funded by the Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism (MDTCC) and Bank Rakyat giving out interest-fee loans from RM1,000 to RM3,000 per trader. Trader Gunalan whose specialty is mutton curry was pleased with the public response.

“It has been good so far and we are hoping for continued fine weather to draw bigger crowds,” said Gunalan who is also manager of Sri Pelita Islamic Cafe.

Among those present at the function were Bank Rakyat Sibu branch manager Sarif Kadri and Bank Islam Sibu branch manager Iswandy Shafi-ee.
