KUCHING: Three senior citizens were nabbed by police under Ops Soga VI for collecting bets for the ongoing Euro 2016 football tournament in France.

The three elderly bookies were caught red-handed at a food court in Tabuan Jaya around midnight yesterday by a team

from the state Anti-Vice, Gambling and Gangsterism unit (D7) following a tip-off.

State CID chief SAC Dev Kumar, who confirmed the arrests, said the trio, aged 63 to 69 years, were found in possession of mobile phones, sheets of paper containing placed bets and nearly RM1,000 cash.

“The three males were arrested on suspicion of collecting bets for games played during UEFA Euro 2016 football tournament.

“The raiding party, led by Inspector Zuriawati Zainal Abidin, also seized two mobile phones, sheets of paper containing the placed bets, a Euro 2016 game schedule and cash amounting to RM942.

All three men are being investigated under Section 6(3) of the Betting Act 1963.

The arrest of the bookies comes a day after another man was detained by personnel from the state D7 in a coffee

shop at Rock Road for collecting bets for the ongoing tournament.
