Senior (fifth left) and UPP Serian branch members are in high spirits after Sunday’s meeting.

KUCHING: United People’s Party (UPP) welcomes applications for membership from those who subscribe to the party’s principles, including from any of the partyless Barisan Nasional (BN) elected representatives.

The party’s Serian branch chief Senior William Rade said it will be of great advantage if any of the partyless BN elected representatives become part of UPP’s big family, and using it as a platform to continue their political struggle.

Senior was referring to the direct BN candidates who won their respective seats in the May 7 state election but have yet to join any BN component party. They include John Ilus, the assemblyman for Bukit Semuja which is the newest state seat in Serian.

“UPP as a political party is very much intact and relevant from the day it was established. We want to make it a point that we will not waiver in our struggle, and rest assured we are here to play our role and be part of the BN big family.

“We are eagerly looking forward to be admitted as a full-fledged BN member in the near future,” he said yesterday.

He informed that UPP Serian branch held its meeting on Sunday, and that the recruitment of new party members in Serian was on-going.

He praised party president Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh, saying the latter’s capable leadership had propelled the party forward and kept it intact politically.

These feats and achievements had given Wong the boost, strength and determination to continue leading the party and making it relevant, added Senior.

“During the just-concluded state election and contesting under a Barisan Nasional direct candidate ticket, UPP spearheaded by Wong won with a bigger majority namely in Bawang Assan, Dudong, Mambong, Engkilili and Opar. UPP with the status of BN-plus party will move on and be very determined to move forward as a formidable party to be reckoned with.

“We are proud to say that we are growing from strength to strength, and our membership is increasing tremendously,” he said.

He also pointed out the UPP Serian branch and the 25 branches in the state’s southern, central and northern region were strong and would continue to render their undivided support to wong’s leadership.

“We the members have the full confidence and trust in him, who is the newly minted Second Minister of Finance. His leadership is still very much needed and we wish that he will continue to guide and lead the party to even greater heights.

“We believe that as a veteran politician, he is capable of resolving any problem that will arise, if any, amicably,” he said.

He also mentioned that Wong is assisted by capable central executive committee members who will consolidate and strengthen the party especially in playing its role as a BN-plus member.

“We as loyal party members pledge to be at his side through good and challenging political environments.”
