KUCHING: Like a building, students need a solid base to kick-start their career. and Heriot-Watt University, a leading name in British higher education, offers students just that.

With roots tracing back to the 1800s, the university is renowned for commitment to educational excellence. This has led to the university garnering a multitude of accolades which include placing 77th in the world and 10th in the UK according to the Times Higher Education ‘100 under 50’ World University Rankings 2015. Additionally, the university also ranked among the top 10 UK universities for some of its subjects, which include Chemical Engineering, Chemistry and Mechanical Engineering, according to the National Student Survey 2015.

Heriot-Watt now operates out of five campuses: three in the UK, one in Dubai and one in Malaysia. At present, Heriot-Watt University Malaysia offers an array of programmes at foundation, undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Its foundation programme offerings include Foundation in Science and Foundation in Business, with the latter also offering an Actuarial Science route. Both these programmes are one year in duration and serve as preparatory courses as students make the transition to degree studies.

Thanks to its multiple campuses, students also have the unique option to transfer campuses under its GoGlobal programme.

This has proven to be an attractive prospect for Paul Birly, who said Heriot-Watt is well recognised for its quality of teaching and moreover, “it also presented me the opportunity to easily transfer to the Dubai and UK campuses”.

He added that there is a special fee waiver available for those from the Malaysian campus, and there are close to no academic barriers.

He explained that while the campus transfer option was previously only made available for undergrads, it is now also offered this to students who have completed their foundation programme.

With plans to gradaute in Mechanical Engineeering, Birly, who came from SMK Pengiran Omar II in Sipitang, Sabah, found the Science foundation to be the perfect fit.

“It is a faster track than other pre-university programmes. It prepares my higher education mindset by focusing on specific subjects that help my transition to a degree,” he explained.

What’s more, upon completion of the Foundation programme, students are allowed tailored entry into any undergrad studies and eventually gointo the working world.
