No medal for state rhythmic gymnasts

KUCHING: Sarawak’s rhythmic gymnastic squad failed to deliver any medal as they settled in fourth place with 95.85 points in the team event on the first day of competition at the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Indoor Stadium yesterday.

The Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur (WPKL) collected 142.1 points to win the only gold medal offered in the day’s programme. Perak won silver with 124.65 points and Selangor took the bronze with 122.95 points.

WPKL dominated all four categories namely Rope, Hoop, Ball and Clubs.

In the Rope event, WPKL kick started their dominence by collecting 42.15 points leading their rivals Perak (34.81), Selangor (33.95), Sarawak (26.65 points) and Pahang with (24.25).

In the Hoop event, WPKL continued their momentum collecting 39.95 points compared to Selangor (38.9 points) and Perak (38.45).

The ball and club category which started at 3pm saw WPKL coast to victory to secure the gold medal.

Sarawak head coach Shaleen Tay was philosophical about her team’s display.

“I’m satisfied with the overall performance today, they deserve credit as they have done their best and gave a good fight,” she said.

Four gold medals will be on offer today for the individual category today (July 20) in all order of performance: Rope, Hoop, Ball and Clubs.

The state gymnasts are expected to continue their struggle to deliver medals. — by Daryll Law
