MIRI: Pakatan Harapan Miri is making a bold move by setting up ‘Pakatan Harapan Community Council’ and appointing seven of its members to monitor the performance of Miri City Council (MCC) councillors.

State DAP secretary Alan Ling Sie Kiong said four of their ‘councillors’ are from DAP, two from PKR and one from Amanah.

“The seven appointed PH councillors will attend regular MCC full council meetings that are open to the public under the Local Government Ordinance to act as check and balance and to bring up unresolved issues,” Alan told members of the press yesterday.

He further said the PH ‘councillors’ would be under the guidance of Pujut assemblyman Dr Ting Tiong Choon and Miri MP Dr Michael Teo.

He named the seven PH councillors as Mustapha Erol (Amanah), Peter Hii (DAP), Sim Siew Chieng (DAP), Ling Siew Ping (DAP), Hellan Empaing (DAP), Jemat Panjang (PKR) and Kho Bee Kiong (PKR).

Alan said the idea was mooted over the last two weeks when the term of the councillors expired on June 30.

He said PH and the general public were very disappointed that until today the incoming councillors had not been named yet, which caused disruption in the running of the councils.

Elaborating on the role of PH Community councillors, Alan said their more important duty and role is the day-to-day assistance to residents in terms of garbage collection, environment, cleanliness, landscaping, infrastructure maintenance, road, drainage, traffic lights as well as keeping an eye on vice activities and making proposals to improve the living condition of the community.

“We hope MCC is receptive to constructive proposals and constructive criticisms,” he said.

The idea of having PH Community councillors was also to enlighten the public on the roles played by councillors, state assemblymen and members of Parliament, he added.

For ease of communication, he said the ‘councillors’ had been asked to publish their email address and WhatsApp contact.
