SCB lists out ASA finalists, awards presentation Aug 5

KUCHING: The Sarawak Convention Bureau (SCB) yesterday revealed the finalists of the 8th Anak Sarawak Award (ASA).

For the Anak Sarawak Outstanding Achievement Award, the three finalists are: Dr Amalia Madihie (Faculty of Cognitive Sciences & Human Development, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak); Dr Lee Lai Soon (Laboratory of Computational Statistics and Operational Research, Universiti Putra Malaysia); and Prof Dr V. Sivaram (Department of Botany, Bangalore University).

The finalists for the Convention of Excellence Award are: Planet Conventions and Events Sdn Bhd (Asia for Animals Borneo Conference 2015); Obstetrical & Gynaecological Society of Malaysia (24th Asian and Oceania Congress of Obstetrics and Gynaecology 2015); and Academy of Medicine Malaysia (Annual General Meeting and Annual Scientific Meeting of the College of Surgeons 2014).

The finalists for the Corporate Events of Excellence Award are: Borneo Adventure (Hunger Games Borneo); CPH Travel Agencies (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd (Adventuring Sarawak Like Never Before with Malaysia Convention and Exhibition Bureau (MYCEB); and Cat City Holidays Sdn Bhd (The International Association for Dental Research (IADR) South East Asia Division Meeting 2014 & SEA Association for Dental Education Conference 2014).

For the Products and Services of Excellence Award, the finalists are: Semadang Borneo Adventure; The Barber Restaurant; and Diethlem Travel Sarawak.

For the Meeting Venues of Excellence Award, the finalists are: Islamic Information Centre Kuching; the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching; and Imperial Hotel Kuching.

Borneo Post journalist Sharon Kong Yin Hieng with her entry ‘Bidding for conventions in Sarawak’ is one of the finalists for the Business Events Journalism Excellence Award, which covers print and online. The others are  S. Puvaneswary (“Watching and Waiting”, TTG Asia Media Pte Ltd); and David Hogan Jr. (“Why Choose Sarawak for Business Events”, Malaysia Asia).

The finalists for the Anak Sarawak Young Leadership Scholarship Award are: Ayres Amie (Aiman Planet Borneo Tours and Travel Services Sdn. Bhd.); Jeremy Jamaludin (CPH Travel Agencies); and Charlene Bong Myn Ee (Pullman Kuching).

The awards presentation on August 5 will be graced by Yang Di Pertua Negeri Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud and wife Toh Puan Sri Raghad Taib.

The ceremony is also part of the 10th anniversary of Business Events in Sarawak – Trailblazing the Business Event Revolution.

SCB general manager (marketing & sales) Amelia Roziman said the ASA is ultimately a gathering of industry partners and leaders of the Business Events (BE) profession and a platform for business opportunities to bloom between existing clients, new partners, local and international media.

For all the categories (except Outstanding Achievement Award where the winner receives a grant worth RM20,000), winners will receive marketing and training support up to RM10,000 towards participation at international trade shows to market their products and services, or to attend conferences, which translate into greater skills through knowledge sharing, capacity building and technological updates.

“They can even use the winnings to attend ICCA Congress 2016, which is happening right at our doorstep in November, to meet and build relationships with the most influential global players in the BE profession.

“A truly rare opportunity that is not to be missed,” said Amelia, who is also the Chairperson of the 8th ASA committee.
