Kch-bp090816-jt-KEBAYA-p2 copyKUCHING: Carmila Ivy Manja, 22, beat 13 other finalists to be crowned Miss Malaysia Kebaya Sarawak 2016 in her third foray into a beauty pageant at the Waterfront Hotel here recently.

The Bidayuh lass from Bau walked away with RM2,000, a crown, trophy, sash, bouquet of flowers, certificate of participation and other sponsored prizes for winning the pageant.

“I had not expected to win but I am overjoyed as my hard work, discipline and determination have paid off. Experience from other beauty pageants taught me a lot.

“I will save the cash prize to help my family and donate to my church St Patrick Church in Krokong, Bau,” Carmila said when met after the event.

Prior to this, Carmila was the first runner-up for the 2015 Miss Borneo Kebaya and first runner-up for 1Singai Beauty Pageant.

This competition is her third.

The youngest of three siblings works as a flight attendant at MasWings. She credits her family, especially her mother who is her biggest supporter.

When asked her advice to aspiring pageant contestants, she said: “Be focused in what you do in life. Time management is important and if you can manage it well, you can do almost anything with good results. Confidence is the key to winning a beauty pageant.”

First runner-up Jacqualine Ayong received a cash prize of RM1,500, trophy, sash, bouquet, certificate of participation, and other sponsored prizes.

Third place went to Joyce Nyupeh who received RM1,000, trophy, sash, bouquet, certificate of participation, and other sponsored prizes.

Miss Photogenic, Miss Talent, Miss Beautiful Smile and Miss 3BSkin Ambassador were Jessy Gantle, Caroline Kueh, Michelleiyn Jong and Helen Letteny respectively.

Each of these subsidiary title winners received a cash prize of RM200, trophy, sash, bouquet, certificate of participation and other sponsored prizes.

Other contestants in Miss Malaysia Kebaya Sarawak 2016 were Christine Yoko Sima, Agatha Musa, Emilia Enterang, Marilyn Josep, Shahzeera Kasbendi, Monica Sagindi, and Steptanie Audrey John. They each received a trophy, certificate of participation and other sponsored prizes.

A beauty pageant for married women, Mrs Malaysia Kebaya Sarawak 2016 was competed by 14 participants.

They are Angela Martin, Jaime Zurina, Joan Rosette, Mimi Norfadzillah Stephen, Rugayah Ramli, Paula Robert, Ezra Malryam, Quennie Carmem, Elizabeth Garai, Alia Muhd Ali Chung, Brennice Eva, Norita Bangga, Faridah Azahari and Juliana Abd Rahman.

Angela was Mrs Malaysia Kebaya Sarawak 2016, receiving RM2,000 and a crown while Jaime and Joan in second and third place received RM1,500 and RM1,000, respectively.

Additionally they each received a trophy, sash, bouquet, certificate of participation and other sponsored prizes.

Subsidiary titles of Mrs Photogenic, Mrs Talent, Mrs Beautiful Smile and Mrs 3B Skin Ambassador went to Norita, Jaime, Paula and Ezra respectively, each receiving a RM200 cash prize, trophy, sash, bouquet, certificate of participation and other sponsored prizes.

All winners of consolation prizes received a trophy, certificate of participation and other sponsored prizes.

The Miss and Mrs Malaysia Kebaya Sarawak 2016 were judged by their founder Jason Hee and other beauty pageant professionals including Ferdinand Rayner, Connie Nyombui and Princess Alma Ridi based on personality, confidence, talent, intelligence, attendance, beauty and their 3B Skin tagline.

Judges of the contestants’ talent were Hafiz Zulkipli, Ellna Jiway and Joo Evannoel Patrick Sibat.

The audience viewed a slideshow of photos and videos of the contestants who went on stage to introduce themselves, show their talent, and react in the Q&A session.

Additionally participants had to come up with a creative tagline for a skincare product for online store 3BSkin.

The pageant aimed to enhance understanding of the Kebaya culture and traditions among Sarawakians; uncover talent in the fashion and modelling industry; and expose the beauty and diversity of Sarawak’s culture.

The sponsors were the management of CityOne Megamall, Hafiz Dressmaker, Foamwork Coffee, 3BSkin, and the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture Sarawak.
