KUCHING: The state government acknowledges non-governmental organisations’ (NGOs) efforts in engaging youths in healthy activities.

Assistant Minister for Solidarity Rosey Yunus said NGOs like Azam were leading by example in this endeavour.

“Spaces such as Azam Youth Central is perfect for youths to gather and interact while at the same time empower them by engaging in productive activities,” said Rosey at the launching of Azam Youth Central at UTC Kuching, here yesterday.

She added that the opening of space such as Azam Youth Central would also further spur the youth’s organisational and social skills, acquiring leadership traits and at the same time technical and entrepreneurial skills.

Rosey further elaborated that the state government was keen to see the youths grow, especially in the creative aspects, while at the same time realizing the importance of being knowledgeable, having the right skills and resilience.

“Intensive and continuous engagement with the youths at the same time can contribute towards reducing social ills among our youths,” she added.

Meanwhile, Azam honorary secretary Mohammad Ariff Irwani Azahari in his speech said Azam Youth Central was previously located at Medan Pelita before moving to UTC.

“We welcome youths from this city to come over and participate in social interaction, and we believe that this space will further enhance social harmony as youths who came were from various races,” said Ariff.

“Over the past four years, AZAM has collaborated with various stakeholders, including relevant players related to youth development and we are grateful that we always received positive response and support,” he added.

The event yesterday also saw the presentation of prizes to winners of the ‘Sarawak Movie in the Rainforest’ competition held  in conjunction with the Rainforest World Music Festival last month.

First place went to Fabian Hee of TL Studio, followed by Eric Lee Chien Ying of Eric Production and Jerry Chua Hsien Khoon from Meet The Borneons.
