KUCHING: Police impounded 70 motorcycles and issued over 200 traffic summonses during an anti-crime operation on the eve of National Day.

The six-hour operation, which ended at 5am yesterday, was led by district police chief ACP Abang Ahmad Abang Julai and involved a total of 129 officers and rank-and-file personnel.

He said one area of focus was the Masja square in Petra Jaya – known for illegal street racing at night – where a total of 162 motorcycles and 10 cars were netted for inspection.

“Following checks on the vehicles in the area, we impounded 70 motorcycles and issued a total of 142 summonses for offences ranging from illegal exhaust modification, not having a valid licence, missing side mirrors, and illegal licence plates,” Abang Ahmad said when contacted yesterday.

Additionally, he said vehicle inspections were also conducted at roadblocks set up at Jalan Sherip Masahor, Jalan Wan Alwi, Jalan Barrack and Jalan Padungan, which saw 63 traffic summonses issued for various offences.

“During the roadblocks and operation at Masja, we also did checks on individuals to see if they have any criminal records or are on the wanted list,” he said.

In total, Abang Ahmad said police conducted checks on 1,030 persons during the operation, including 45 local and foreign workers at a construction site in Jalan Tun Jugah who were all found to have fulfilled the conditions of their work permit.

The impounded motorcycles, meanwhile, were hauled to the district police headquarters at Jalan Simpang Tiga pending further action.
