New airport tax rates from January — Liow

KUALA LUMPUR: The new rates for the Passenger Service Charge, or commonly known as airport tax, will be implemented from Jan 1 next year in all airports nationwide.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said the new rate announced by the Malaysian Aviation Commission (MAVCOM) was still reasonable compared to other airport charges in the region.

“Our airport charges are much lower than other countries and can be considered moderate even after the raise.

“All are these under MAVCOM.  I leave it to them to forward their views and we have seen the details,” he told reporters after officially opening the SJK (C) Bandar Sungai Long building here yesterday.

He said Malaysia has a very clear policy and there was no discrimination against service charges at both terminals in the Kuala Lumpur International Airport and KLIA2.

In a separate development, Liow said the full report of the forensic investigation on the Malaysia Airline Flight MH17 released by the Joint Investigation Team would be known as early as this month’s end.

“We hope that the JIT can give us the certainty who exactly shot MH17 in a report to be presented later so that we can take legal action against the perpetrators,” he said.

Flight MH17 was enroute to Kuala Lumpur from Amsterdam when it was shot down on July 17, 2014, killing 298 passengers, including crew.  —Bernama
