ta04123SIBU: A sketch depicting multi racial Sarawak is the latest addition to a mural painting here.

The painting in black and white is located at the back of Supershan Supermarket in front of Sibu Central Market. It was completed only days ago.

It features nine human characters comprising a Dayak couple and their son and daughter, a Malay/Melanau couple with their daughter in school uniform and a Chinese grandmother with her school-going grandson.

The painting is the ninth completed under Sibu Municipal Council’s street art project which started in 2015 as a preparation for Visit Sibu Year 2017.

The paintings located at different locations in the town centre are all done by local artists.

The first one, depicting a wharf labourer (coolie) in Sibu in the 50s and 60s, is  located at Khoo Peng Loong Road.

Images of local delicacies namely ‘kompia’, ‘dian mian hu’, ‘pulut panggang’, ‘kampua’, ‘penyaram’, ‘kuih jala’ at a lane in Market Road is the second painting done under the project.

The third painting, titled ‘Childhood’ is located at the open air food stalls in Sibu Central Market while the fourth painting depicts live chickens and ducks wrapped in newspaper at the same location.

The fifth to eighth paintings and their respective locations depict butterflies painted on the wall of a hotel at Maju Road, an old bus image and the picture of a food stall operator preparing ‘Dian Mian Hu’ at lanes in Blacksmith Road and a batik painting at Sibu Central Market.

Meanwhile Kiu Chiong Loi, 70, is featured in the painting that shows him preparing ‘Dian Mian Hu’.

The painting is located about 20 metres from his stall at a lane in Blacksmith Road here.

Kiu, who does not speak much, said he had been making the special dish using his family recipes for more than 50 years.

He just nodded when asked if he is happy with the painting.

‘Dian Mian Hu’ is a traditional Foochow savoury soup served with rice cake, fish ball, jelly fungus, sliced pork and cuttlefish.
