MIRI: Students from various courses in Curtin University, Sarawak attended an Oil and Gas Internship Fair recently which enabled representatives from the academia and the industry to connect and form strong industrial links.

It was a platform for students to meet and network with industrial representatives from several oil and gas companies which also offered internship opportunities for the students who were seeking industrial placements.

This student-driven initiative was organized by the Curtin Sarawak social ambassadors Teh Ean Nee and Wallace Ling in collaboration with the Society of Petroleum Engineers Curtin Sarawak Student Chapter (SPECS) to provide a platform for students to connect with the industry.

“The intention of the event is to improve their prospects of acquiring their internship placements which is a critical requirement for an undergraduate,” said Ling.

The industrial participants of the Internship Fair included its main patron sponsor UMW Drilling Academy, Reservoir Link, PhBorneo, Awatra, Schlumberger, Petronas Carigali, BSTS, Mui Lee Enterprise and Maser Marine Engineering.

The Internship Fair was part of a 2-day Oil and Gas Internship Convention (OGIC) by UMW Drilling Academy which also included a CV and Interview Workshop.

The workshop featured guest speakers from both Shell and Petronas Carigali which aimed at enhancing the skills of students in writing their resumes and interview strategies.

It was supported by the Department of Petroleum Engineering, Department of Applied Geology, Curtin Sarawak Faculty of Engineering and Science (FOES) and the Office of Learning and Teaching.

CSSA was originally founded to aid secondary school students in developing their leadership capabilities and soft skills. After 4 years of service, CSSA expanded its scope to aid in the development of undergraduates of Curtin Sarawak. Currently, CSSA has its sights on the growing internship issues in Curtin University and seeks to address this problem.

Meanwhile, the Society of Petroleum Engineers Curtin Sarawak Student Chapter was founded in 2013 as an organisation to represent the student community in the oil and gas industry.

Many of its efforts centred on establishing network between the academia and the industry, and providing knowledge on the oil and gas industry.

Since its inception, SPECS has been awarded the Gold Standard Student Chapter Award by SPE International for three consecutive years for its outstanding services for the O&G community.
