LAWAS: The executive deputy president of Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS), Datuk Seri Panglima Dr Maximus Ongkili, reiterated the party’s stand that it will not support the implementation of Hudud law.
Voicing out PBS’ strong objection to the PAS’ Private Bill on Syariah amendment, Ongkili who is also the Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water, said they would use all the power they have to prevent it from being imposed.
“Proposed amendments to be tabled by Hadi contravene provisions of the Federal Constitution,” he said adding that the country already has it own Penal Code to punish criminals according to their offences.
“Should the Bill come to pass, it will be overlapping the existing legal system that we have been practising all these while,” he stressed.
He also said the country cannot have two systems at the same time.
While the hudud law only applied to Muslims, it would “if enforced it will dictate the lifestyles of everyone, especially the non-Muslims, he added.
For the sake of all Malaysians, PBS will stand strong in objecting the Bill from being approved and imposed.
“PBS will strongly reject the Bill, which is being tabled by PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang,” he said after officiating a new community hall and handling ceremony of government contribution to the religious institutions here in Kampung Baru Mission.
At the event yesterday, Ongkili who is also the Kota Marudu member of parliament presented the Federal Government’s contributions of RM1 million to 20 churches here, with each receiving RM50,000.
