MIRI: The annual Chinese New Year Bazaar at Jalan Raja and High Street will have a 1Malaysia concept.

Co-organising chair Lee Khoi Yun said there will be a total of 260 stalls at the bazaar, which will run from Jan 20-27.

“There will also be a particular zone created for Bumiputera traders in the bazaar. Sixty per cent of the stalls will be selling food,” he said after the final committee meeting yesterday.

“The bazaar attracts local and foreign tourists and we anticipate the number of visitors to increase compared to last year.”

Lee, who is also Miri Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCCI) chairman, said there will be daily entertainment from 7pm to 11.30pm to showcase the Chinese community’s rich traditions and culture. Traffic police and People’s Volunteer Corps (Rela) personnel will assist with controlling traffic flow in the area.

The bazaar is jointly organised by MCCCI, Miri City Council (MCC), the police, Public Works Department, Sarawak Energy Berhad, Malaysian Red Crescent Miri chapter, Miri Parking System Sdn Bhd, and Rela.

Assistant Minister for Tourism Datuk Lee Kim Shin has been invited to launch the bazaar on Jan 21.
