PUTRAJAYA: Twenty Malaysian tourists who were at Karak Castle in Jordan when a shootout took place at the location yesterday, are safe.

Wisma Putra in a statement said the 20 were brought to safety by Jordan security forces and being sheltered and provided assistance by the local authorities.

Two of the Malaysians who were injured, received treatment at a nearby hospital and reported to be stable.

The statement said the Malaysian embassy in Amman had contacted Jordan authorities which confirmed that the Malaysian visitors were all safe.

It said the embassy had also given a reminder to Malaysians particularly students at Mu’tah University near Bandar Karak to abide by the security orders issued by the authorities and the embassy itself.

The attack on Karak Castle in Karak Town located 132 kilometres to the south of Amman the capital of Jordan, resulted in the death of a tourist from Canada and a number of Jordanian police personnel.

No party has claimed responsibility for the attack. – Bernama
