KUCHING: A man suspected to have sexually assaulted an underage girl was remanded for seven days from yesterday to facilitate police investigation.

The 22-year-old suspect was arrested by the police at Jalan Sultan Tengah in Petra Jaya near here yesterday.

The arrest was made following a police report lodged by a 14-year-old girl who claimed that she was raped by the suspect.

The report was lodged at Santubong police station on Dec 12.

Kuching police chief ACP Abang Ahmad Abang Julai, who confirmed the arrest, said in the initial investigation, the suspect tested positive for drugs.

“The suspect has a previous criminal record for committing rape,” he said when contacted yesterday.

The suspect will be held in police custody until Jan 4 next year to enable investigation of the case under Section 376 of the Penal Code for rape.

The suspect is the same person who created a drama after he climbed to the edge of the roof of a house on Monday.

It was reported that Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) personnel managed to persuade him to go down from the roof but it is no known what triggered the man to behave in such a manner.

Separately, a man detained in connection with the robbery of a convenience store in Tabuan Jaya was also remanded for seven days from yesterday.

The 26-year-old suspect from Jalan Astana was arrested by the police at his house at around 5pm on Tuesday following a report on the robbery lodged at Sekama police station.

His remand order will expire on Jan 4.

On Tuesday, two men armed with parang and wearing mask and helmet struck at the convenience store early in the morning.

Both of the men were wearing the uniform of staff of the convenience store when they entered the premises and robbed the staff who were counting cash in the storeroom of the premises and made off with RM12,000.

Abang Ahmad confirmed the arrest and said investigation was going on under Section 395/397 of the Penal Code for armed robbery.
