These motorists make a stop at a section of Batang Sadong bridge to take photos – a practice that is not only causing inconvenience to other road users, but can be dangerous.

KUCHING: It’s a bridge with a view but motorists crossing the newly-opened Batang Sadong bridge are advised against making stops at any section along both sides flanking the two lanes as this can endanger others.

Sadong Jaya assemblyman Aidel Lariwoo, when contacted by The Borneo Post, said the situation worsens during evenings and weekends.

“We do understand that some of them want to capture the astonishing view from the bridge, but this act of stopping the cars (along the bridge) is causing congestion and creating a hassle to other road users,” he pointed out.

Aidel also observed that the practice could endanger those who got out of their cars and took photos without watching out for the traffic.

“Other motorists may not notice those who stop by the bridge. This is where accidents could happen.

“Taking selfies is fun, but observe safety when doing it. If you really need to, park your car away from the bridge and take the pedestrian walkway.

“It is fine if you want to look at the view, but parking your vehicles on the middle of the bridge is a big no,” he stressed.

The bridge, which links Sadong Jaya with Sebuyau and Simunjan, was officially declared open by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak on Dec 18.

The structure spans 1.48km across Batang Sadong, making it the longest river bridge in Malaysia.

The RM231-million project reached completion two weeks earlier than scheduled.
