KUCHING: Three individuals, including a woman and a youth, are being detained for six days beginning yesterday in connection with forgery of banknotes.

The remand order for the suspects – aged between 17 and 36 – were made before Magistrate Zulhairil Sulaiman, who allowed their detention in police custody until Jan 6 next year to facilitate investigation.

Kuching police chief ACP Abang Ahmad Abang Julai, who confirmed receiving the report on the case, said the suspects were detained on Thursday afternoon.

“They were arrested at a hotel in Jalan Tun Razak during a raid conducted by a police team following public tip-off,” he said in a statement yesterday.

The seized items were three laptop computers, two printers, 31 pieces of A4-printed RM100 notes, 10 pieces of A4-printed RM50 notes, five pieces of A4-printed RM20 notes, three money detectors, three mobile phones, a USB drive, 19 pieces of RM100 notes and seven RM50 notes – all believed to be counterfeit notes.

The case is being investigated under Section 489(d) of the Penal Code for possessing equipment to produce counterfeit money, which carries a jail term up to 20 years and a fine upon conviction.
