KOTA KINABALU: Following the success of its first corporate social responsibility (CSR) water supply rehabilitation project in five villages in Ranau last year, Kupikupifm returns with its second endeavour to make a difference in two villages in Pensiangan this weekend.

Under the umbrella of ‘Operasi Kerja Komuniti 96.3FM,’ the Sabah-based community radio station, in partnership with the Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah (PBRS), will be supplying LED renewable solar lamps to all households of Kampung Buntulon alongside breaking ground on gravity water rehabilitation works.

Kupikupifm programme manager, Lester Calvin Miol, said that supplying the LED lamps would mean that the villagers no longer had to rely on candles and kerosene lamps which were not only costly, but also a fire hazard and harmful to the environment.

Meanwhile, the gravity rehabilitation works in both Kampung Buntulon and Kampung Salung would also help to improve the quality of life for the villagers, he said.

“The rehabilitation works will include repairing the water catchment areas, installing new water tanks and replacing damaged water pipes in the two villages,” said Lester, adding that funding was raised through donations from the public headed by Wanita MCA.

He also said that Kupikupifm was encouraged to continue with their CSR programme after seeing the positive impact of their first initiative last year on the lives of villagers in Ranau.

“We’ve checked on the situation in Ranau after we initiated the water rehabilitation project and we’ve seen the change it has brought upon the community there.

“After the earthquake, many of their water sources were damaged but most households are now adequately supplied.

“We don’t claim that our project solved the main problem, but we have managed to help the villagers as best we can,” he said.

Additionally, Lester announced that Edaran Tan Chong Motor Sdn Bhd (ETCM) would also be providing a few units of the acclaimed Nissan Navara, the official car of the CSR programme, to transport crew through the rough terrains and into the interior of Pensiangan.

“We would like to put on record our sincere appreciation and thanks to PBRS in Pensiangan, Wanita MCA, Edaran Tan Chong Motor and the State government for supporting our Operasi Kerja Komuniti 96.3FM in Pensiangan.

“This partnership and support means a lot to us as we are able to make a difference in the lives of the villagers for now and in years to come,” Lester added.

Staying true to its community-centred agenda, Kupikupifm will also be bringing entertainment to Pagalungan town through a mini concert and karaoke competition on Saturday, January 21 at 1pm.

Renowned veteran singers such as Felix Augus and Francis Landong are invited as guest artistes, while locals can take part in the karaoke competition where 10 winners will walk away with hampers.

Lester also said that in line with the radio station’s objective to provide a platform for local talent, local musicians were welcomed to present their material during the concert.

The effort was backed by PBRS deputy president, Arthur Kurup, who conceded that the interior folks were musically talented but did not have the exposure to pursue and nurture their talent.

Furthermore, Kupikupifm will also be donating 250 packs of 10kg rice to deserving households, apart from a football friendly match to further foster the brotherhood spirit among the community.
