SERIAN: The Bidayuhs must strive to seek the best educational qualifications, which have helped many members from the community to reach high positions in the civil service, the private sector and also politics.

Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri Richard Riot said without the right amount of education, many of these Bidayuhs would not be where they are today.

“I must say that I am extremely proud of the achievements of all high-ranking Bidayuhs. Successful Bidayuhs make me very proud to be a Bidayuh.

“My wish is to see a continuity of such achievements by younger Bidayuhs – this would only happen if we have the right amount of education,” Riot, who is also Serian MP, said in his address at a thanksgiving party on Sunday, thrown by Major (Rtd) Datuk Peter Runin who is the political secretary to the Minister of Human Resources.

The minister was speaking as a special guest of Peter, who was conferred with the ‘Darjah Indera Mahkota Pahang’ (DIMP) last month.

On this award, Riot had only praises for Peter whom he described as ‘a true soldier, who has served the King and country well; a brother and a close friend who was there every time I needed him’.

“For his ability, dedication and loyalty, Peter deserves this ‘Datukship’,” Riot said, adding that it was his fervent hope to see more deserving and qualified members of the community being given such recognition in the future.

Meanwhile, Peter said he owed his ‘Datukship’ to Riot, all Serian constituents as well as his friends and family members.

The Sunday night event also hosted a number of other distinguished guests such as Bukit Semuja assemblyman John Ilus, political secretary to chief minister John David, Industrial Court Chief Judge Annie Solep, Social Security Organisation (Socso) deputy chief executive officer John Riba Marin, Socso Sarawak director Philip Sangkan, state civil service human capital resource director William Nyigor, former Serian Division Resident Dahim Nadot,
