KUCHING: Kuching City North Commission (DBKU) is awaiting the greenlight from the cabinet on its Unity Park master plan and will be made public before the project is implemented.
According to DBKU Datuk Bandar, Datuk Abang Abdul Wahap Julai, the Unity Park project is close to reality with the announcement of development grant by Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg at the opening of Majlis Agenda DBKU recently.
“We have garnered much information, suggestions and even input from the public as we wanted the public to have a say in this project,” he told thesundaypost yesterday.
Abdul Wahap added he was confident that the park, once completed would be on a par with other parks in the world such as Central Park in New York and Hyde Park in London.
“We plan to have several entrances to the park, which will also see facilities such as cafes and water features,” he said.
He added that the masterplan was expected to be presented to the cabinet next month and works to kick start as soon as it received the approval.
“Once completed, the area, which includes Reservoir Park as among the oldest parks in Malaysia since the Brooke era will reflect the multicultural society of Sarawak and its lush green as an image,” he said.
Abang Johari had recently at a function in Petra Jaya said RM10 million would be set aside for the first phase of the park, which would include upgrading works on the lake.
“We will also restore buildings in the park, turning them into restaurants, cafeteria, craft sales centre and gym. We also look forward to the first phase to be completed before the ‘City Day’ celebration on August 1 next year (2018),” he said.
