LAWAS: Local police arrested two individuals on Sunday for suspected involvement in the abuse and possession of amphetamine.

In the first case, a 33-year-old jobless woman was arrested around midnight after a urine test proved positive for amphetamine.

Lawas police chief Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad said the woman was arrested by the Narcotics team and detained for further investigation under Section 15(1) (a) of Dangerous Drug Act 1952.

The next individual – a 36-year-old male labourer – was apprehended at a parking area here at 11.09am, after substance suspected to be drugs weighing 1.1g was found inside his bag during a spotcheck.

Further checking revealed a small black bag inside the pocket of his blue jacket that contained a purple candy container with eight straws inside it.

Each straw, in turn, contained greenish crystalline substance suspected to be Syabu.

The man also tested positive for amphetamine.

Police are investigating the case under Section 12 (2) and 15 (1) (a) of Dangerous Drug Act 1952 for possession and abuse of amphetamine.

Possession of the drug is an offence under Section 12 (2), which carries a maximum penalty of RM100,000 in fine or imprisonment of up to five years, or both upon conviction; the drug abuse offence is punishable by up to RM5,000 in fine or two years’ imprisonment.

ASP Jason Baya led the team leading to the arrests here.
