KUCHING: A strong foundation is essential for a successful career in the field of engineering and students will be able find that at Heriot-Watt University Malaysia.

A leading name in the industry, Heriot-Watt is ranked 34th in the UK and fourth in Scotland, and is placed in the top 10 in the UK for Chemical Engineering and Building among others, according to the Complete University Guide 2017.

Additionally, the university is also ranked 27th in the UK and fourth in Scotland, according to the Guardian University Guide 2017.  The university’s pathway to its engineering programme begins with its Foundation in Science programme.

The foundation programme is designed to prepare and equip students with the necessary set of skills that will smooth their eventual progression into their undergraduate studies, and later the working world.

Moreover, the Foundation in Science programme provides students with a direct pathway to the university’s engineering programmes.

Ling Wan Yan is currently a second year Chemical Engineering student at the Heriot-Watt University Malaysia.  She began her Heriot-Watt journey as part of the university’s pioneer batch of Foundation students in 2014.

“Heriot-Watt’s Foundation in Science Programme is specially designed for engineering students and it is pretty well planned.

“I decided to pursue Chemical Engineering back in high school because of my interests in physics and chemical reaction, and how these play a role in our daily life. The Heriot-Watt culture is very friendly; lecturers and students are very helpful,” she added.

Fellow student, Chooi Li has a keen interest in Mechanical Engineering, and chose Heriot-Watt’s Foundation in Science programme because of its preparatory nature.

“The depleting of fossil fuel sources has resulted in various countries seeking out alternative energy sources. I hope to be part of the effort to effect change in this area, and this is why I decided to pursue Mechanical Engineering.

“I chose to do my foundation studies here as the university is well known for its engineering courses and is ranked among the top in the UK. The Foundation syllabus covered not just engineering subjects, but also additional subjects such as Study Skills.

“So far, my student experience here has been exciting and educational. The campus provides sufficient resources to aid me in my studies and the lecturers are very helpful. The university is also getting livelier with various events and activities for students to participate in, which helps create a sense of belonging within the campus,” she shared.

Another unique advantage offered is its inter-campus transfer programme known as Go Global.

Having an international study experience in today’s ever evolving, globalised world has become a highly sought after attribute.

Being established in three countries (UK, Dubai and Malaysia), Heriot-Watt is perfectly poised to offer students a global education.  Through this programme, students can transfer to their campus of choice as long as their programme is offered there.

This option is open to the university’s students who have completed their foundation studies and are continuing with their undergraduate studies, as well as current undergraduate students.

What’s more, the use of the same curriculum in all campuses ensures a seamless transfer process. For more information on the Go Global programme, as well as the programmes and scholarships offered at Heriot-Watt University Malaysia, visit its campus in Putrajaya.
