KUCHING: The Fujian Provincial People’s Scholarship has been extended to the state for the first time, giving one Sarawakian student the opportunity to pursue higher education in the province.

Assistant Minister for Industrial Development (Investment and Promotion) Datuk Julaihi Narawi said the scholarship programme, which started in 2013, was only extended to Sarawak following a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed last year between the Fujian Provincial People’s Government and the Ministry of Industrial and Entrepreneur Development, Trade and Investment.

“The scholarship is a good opportunity for Sarawakians and those who are interested can submit applications,” Julaihi told reporters yesterday.

The scholarship from September to July next year will cover tuition fees, accommodation expenses, comprehensive medical insurance, and RMB800 (RM514) allowance per month for 11 months.

Expenditure for flight tickets, meals and utility bills will be borne by the student.

To date the programme has benefitted students from Okinawa and Nagasaki, Japan; Khon Kaen, Thailand; Luang Prabang, Laos; Opole, Poland; Central Java, Indonesia; and Gangwon and South Jeolla, South Korea.

Applicants must have basic Chinese or English speaking skills, junior college degree or above, and be aged 45 and below.

The successful applicant will receive Chinese language and culture classes and opportunities to understand the economic and social development of Fujian.

The closing date to apply is March 31.
