SIBU: The two fire cases reported in Kampung Bahagia Jaya, Teku here in a span of about a month speak volumes of the urgency for more fire safety talks to be organised for the residents there.

Assistant Minister for Science Research and Biotechnology Dr Annuar Rapaee suggested that the village security and development (JKKK) there jointly hold the talks with the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba).

“It is crucial to emphasise the importance of fire safety such as turning off the gas stove before retiring to bed, not overloading sockets, and ensuring that cooking in the kitchen is not left unattended,” he told The Borneo Post yesterday.

The Nangka assemblyman said he would request Sesco to beef up preventive measures like checking the wiring of houses there.

Eleven persons from three families were left homeless when fire gutted four houses late Tuesday night.

The previous fire in the village which levelled five houses on Feb 6 made 42 persons homeless.

On Wednesday, Dr Annuar handed out RM550 to each of the 11 victims.

The money came from his Nangka Service Centre.

Meanwhile, Sarawak Bomba director Nor Hisham Mohammad said Bomba would organise fire prevention talks with the community there.

Asked on the formation of volunteer fire fighting units (PBS), Nor Hisham said: “Not really practical to set up a PBS. We used to have one there but dissolved it after a while.”
