SARIKEI: The passing of former deputy chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Wong Soon Kai is a great loss to Sarawak in particular and Malaysia in general.

In stating this, Repok assemblyman Dato Sri Huang Tiong Sii described the late veteran politician as an exemplary leader who always put the interest of the party, state and country above anything else.

“As a Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) president from 1991 to 1996, Wong was instrumental in strengthening unity among its members, hence had in a way contributed towards the stability of the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition,” he noted.

As a surgeon and a political leader, Wong was known by the people of all walks of life for his humbleness and kind-hearted disposition, he added.  He believes Wong will be remembered by the people for his great leadership acumen and sincerity in serving the community.

Separately in Kuching, Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang describes Wong as a no-nonsense, disciplined and a great leader.

He said Wong had always been a loyal Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) member and wanted the party to play an inclusive role in the Barisan Nasional (BN) decision-making.

“I am saddened by the passing of a comrade who was a great leader…a no-nonsense and disciplined leader,” Lo wrote in his WhatsApp yesterday.

Lo, who is Padawan Municipal Council (PMC) chairman, said he joined the party as member of the Batu Kawa branch when Wong was the party president.

Wong, who was former deputy chief minister, was the third SUPP president from 1991 to 1996.

Lo added that even towards the end Wong was still loyal to the party and always hoped that the party would do well.

“Even towards the end, he was loyal to the party and hoped that we will do well,” Lo said, adding that Wong had met with the present party president Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian and other party members at his residence where he offered good advice and moral support.

He also said Wong’s demise is a big loss to the party.

Expressing his condolences to Wong’s wife Datin Patinggi Datuk Sri Dr Jane Yong and the family, Lo said Wong would always be remembered by the party.
