Teen charged with RM25,000 bribery bid

TAWAU: An 18-year-old Indonesian youth was charged at the Sessions Court here yesterday for trying to bribe a General Operations Force (GOF) officer with RM25,000.

The accused, Syamsul Mudassir was brought to court by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to face a charge under Section 17(b) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009, which carries 20 years’ imprisonment, and could be charged under Section 24(1) of the same Act which provides for a fine of five times the amount of bribe.

The accused on March 27, at about 7.30am at the GOF Battalion 14 control post jetty, Wallace Bay, gave a bribe of RM25,000 cash to a GOF personnel as an inducement not to take action against Lhan Faisal, Jumaidi and Aso Azis, as suspects for trying to smuggle cooking gas cylinders, which are controlled goods.

Judge Egusra Ali fixed May 11 for re-mention of the case.

MACC deputy public prosecutor Rozanna Abd Hadi will prosecute the case, while the accused is defended by counsel Abdul Ghani Zelika .
