SIBU: The ‘Love Earth Day’ taking place at the lobby of Wisma Sanyan here this weekend will include the waste segregation campaign, which was officially launched in February.

The event, run by Sibu Municipal Council (SMC), has been receiving encouraging support from various quarters.

According to organising chairman Councillor Albert Tiang, the programme will involve Methodist Chinese Kindergarten, SJK Tung Hua, SK Perbandaran No. 4, SMK St Elizabeth, Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB), Sibu Environment Department (DOE), Sibu Health Office, Taiwan Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation, ZHA Environmental Sdn Bhd, Mentari Alam Eko (M) Sdn Bhd (Maeko), Borneo Metal and Plastic Recycle Sdn Bhd and Junior Chamber International (JCI) Sibu Chapter.

The theme of the campaign is ‘Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle’ (3R).

Borneo Metal and Plastic Recycle is a licensed computer waste collection centre, while ZHA Environmental is a pioneer-status company that collects used tyres for recycling.

Maeko is a corporate body that provides food waste management solutions to its clientele.

An exhibition will run throughout the two-day event, with 12 booths open to visitors from 10am to 9pm on April 22 (Saturday) and 10am-4pm on April 23 (Sunday).

Other activities will include a workshop on recycling, a children’s public speaking contest, an eco-fashion show, ‘Visit Sibu Year 2017 Mascot Bubu’ design competition, and children’s musical performances.

“We believe that to save the environment, it all begins with children – it is not an adult-only exercise,” Tiang said.

SMC chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King will officiate at the opening ceremony at 11am on Saturday, while Sibu Resident Hii Chang Kee will declare the closing of the event at 3pm on Sunday.

Earth Day was first observed in the United States on April 22, 1970, to promote the idea of ecology, encourage respect for life on Earth and highlight growing concerns about different kinds of pollution.
