MIRI: Housewives and youths should take up stingless bee or ‘kelulut’ rearing as a venture to generate income.

In giving this advice, Assistant Minister of Entrepreneur Development Datuk Naroden Majais said ‘kelulut’ honey is known for its quality as a healthy product not only in great demand locally but also globally.

“Selling and marketing kelulut honey has a high business potential as the product is in high demand throughout the world due to it being a quality health product,” Naroden said at the closing ceremony of a course on kelulat rearing at Petronas Games Village, Miri Thursday.

Present were Miri deputy Resident Nyurak Keti, Sarawak Bumiputera Entrepreneurs Chamber (DUBS) Miri secretary Abdul Razak Joni, Sarawak Bumiputera Entrepreneurs Women Chamber (Dewanita) Miri chairlady Hadijah Sheikh Kassim and Dewanita Sarikei chairlady Mariamah Abdullah.

Fifty participants took part in the course jointly organised by Ministry of Entrepreneur Development and DUBS Miri.

According to Naroden, who is also Assistant Minister of Resource Planning, kelulut rearing can be a lucrative venture as there are not many people in the state taking it up.

So far, he said, there are about 500 Kelulut entrepreneurs in the state and the demand for the honey is increasing, with kelulut honey fetching prices up to RM150 per kg.
