KAPIT: Youth and sports clubs and organisations here have been reminded to organise more sports activities for the younger generation.

Speaking at the opening of the ‘Kapit Open Futsal Competition 2017’ organised by the 7D Sports Club, Bukit Goram assemblyman Jefferson Jamit Unyat said such activities would lead to a healthy lifestyle and foster friendship.

“As I have said earlier, as ‘wakil rakyat’ I would like to call upon various youth and sports clubs/associations in Kapit to actively organise sporting activities to engage the participation of young people. Every effort must be made to involve youth in healthy activities such as sports or games to inculcate healthy lifestyle, promote friendship and team spirit among one another and to serve as deterrent against social vices especially drug abuse,” he pointed out.

A total of 31 teams participated in the competition, which began on Sunday at the Bletih Stadium. Among them are teams from Belaga, Kapit, Song and Mukah. As their assemblyman, Jamit assured he would support any sports competition here.

“Among others I give my full support to sports and games because I have observed whenever a competition is held it is participated by people of all races. Like this afternoon, the competition is participated by youth from communities like the Iban, Orang Ulu, Malay, Melanau and Chinese. This promotes friendship and understanding of each other’s way of life,” he said.

He believes that Kapit has many potential outstanding athletes and it is a matter of unearthing their talents and training them systematically before they are selected to represent the state and country, citing ‘silat’ exponents from here who won two gold medals and a silver medal in Sukma last year as an example.

Later, he announced a government grant of RM5,000 for the 7D Sports Club for organising more competitions. Political secretary to the chief minister Tapah Ata and heads of departments were present.
