KUCHING: Making Sarawak a powerhouse for armsport (arm wrestling, weightlifting and strongman) in the near future and recruitment of athletes.

That vision and follow-up action plan were remarked upon by Sarawak Armsport Association (Sasa) president Mathew Barin.

“We do not know if there are bound to be potential athletes for the sports, especially those who are living in the rural areas,” he told The Borneo Post after paying a courtesy call on Saratok MP Tan Sri William Mawan Ikom at his office yesterday.

The association currently provides free coaching and training for armsport enthusiasts venue at Premier 101 Gym.

It is now encouraging pullers or arm wrestlers to compete in the 2017 Premier 101 Community Club Charity Arm Wrestling Competition on May 5 on 6.

There will be eight categories to be contested this year, up from only three last year.

“We are having arm wrestlers from West Malaysia and Sabah. Some from foreign countries such as Singapore and Philippines has confirmed their participation,” he said.

Cash prizes await all winners up to third spot with the champions walking away with RM3,000 each.

Organisers are targeting 10 institutions – St. Teresa School, Salvation Army, Salvation Army’s Children Home, Sarawak Cheshire Home, Perkata and Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society – to receive donation this year.

Competition entry fee is RM30 and all participants will receive a free tournament T-shirt.

Spectators can also look forward to more that 20 lucky draw prizes.
