SIBU: Police have arrested two of the 11 men wanted in connection with the murder of businessman Clement Tan Teck Howe, who died following a mob attack last Thursday at Wong King Huo Road.

Sibu police chief ACP Saiful Bahri confirmed yesterday that one of the suspects was arrested on Sunday, while the second was arrested on Monday.

“Both have been remanded for seven days. We are working fully on the case now,” he said, but did not disclose which of the 11, aged 20 to 29, were arrested.

It is understood one of the two men arrested surrendered at a police station, while the other was arrested at an unspecified hiding place.

Prior to the latest arrests, two others were arrested and remanded for five days from Saturday.

Police confirmed that the four suspects are now helping with the case, which has been classified as murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code.

The Section carries the mandatory death sentence.

In the incident at 1am, Tan was drinking with friends in a coffee shop when approached by two men.

An argument apparently broke out between him and one of the men.

The two suspects are believed to have then called in a group of men armed with wood and metal objects who allegedly attacked Tan and his friends.

Tan and his friends apparently managed to run around 200 metres before they were surrounded by another group of over 10 attackers, who rained blows on them, leaving Tan unconscious and his friends injured.

He was taken to a private clinic before being transported to Sibu Hospital where he later died.

State police commissioner Datuk Mazlan Mansor has denied the case was a high profile crime linked with gangsterism, but said the murder was sparked by a misunderstanding arising from the messaging app WeChat.
