SIBU: Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) has walked into the Malaysia Book of Records for the most number of remote control race boats in a single event at the Borneo International RC Powerboat Tournament 2017 yesterday.

With 614 boats, SMC broke the record held by Malacca with 522 boats in 2015.

Malaysia Book of Records’ deputy general manager Mohamad Alex Edward confirmed this yesterday morning.

“I would like to announce that SMC, together with the co-organiser Sibu Remote Control Sports Club, are listed in the Malaysia Book of Record for having the most number of remote control race boats in a single event,” he said.

Mohamad presented the certificate to SMC chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King at the opening ceremony of the event, which was also attended by Second Finance Minister Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh, Sibu Resident Hii Chang Kee, event co-organiser Councillor Wong Hie Ping, organising chairman Peter Ling, and Andrew Ling chairman of Sibu Remote Control Sports Club.

There were 169 participants from seven countries: Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Brunei, Dubai, United States of America and Malaysia.

The event being held at Permai Lake Garden, started yesterday and will end tomorrow (April 30).

It is held in conjunction with Visit Sibu Year 2017.

This is the second time this year that Sibu had an event entered in the Malaysia Book of Records.

The first one on Feb 12 was the most number of participants in a Chinese calligraphy event, which attracted 6,140 participants. It was organised by United Chinese Association (UCA) Sibu Division.

Sibu also has several other events that have entered the Malaysia Book of Records in the past including the Largest Senior Citizen Gathering of 1,500 participants organised by Foochow Association, Largest Coffee Drinking session with 5,880 people and the Largest and Longest Pulut Panggang (5.5 metres long and 20cm in diameter) weighing 160kg.
